Dear Friends,
It certainly wasn’t a surprise to see abortion advocates and their allies in Augusta recently announce their all-out assault upon the sanctity of life last month. As much as we expected this attack, it still was a shock. Here is what we will be facing in way of legislation pertaining to abortion:
-
a bill preventing local municipalities from establishing sanctuary cities for the unborn
-
a bill forcing insurance companies to remove deductibles and co-pays, making abortion free
-
a bill protecting out-of-state abortion providers and clients making Maine an abortion destination
-
a bill removing our existing viability standard, legalizing abortion up to the minute of birth
-
a bill attempting to memorialize abortion rights in Maine’s constitution
There are other life bills, along with bills regarding important issues like religious freedom, parental rights, and transgenderism. The Christian Civic League policy team, along with our allies, have our work cut out for us. Mike McClellan and Nick Adolphsen will be tirelessly working to be effective advocates themselves while informing and inspiring Mainers to use their voices to defend truth. We pray to accomplish this by:
-
providing training and messaging to legislators and citizens
-
gathering relevant data and statistics through polling and surveys
-
issuing alerts to let you know when and how to contact your leaders
-
offering research, encouragement, and other necessary resources to our legislative allies
Our efforts to fight these legislative battles are funded through our Beacon Campaign. I usually introduce the need and start raising money for the Beacon Campaign in March. We don’t have the luxury of waiting, as it is clear abortion proponents are mobilizing quickly. I’m thankful for all of you who helped us reach our End of Year goal to fund the 501(c)(3), tax-deductible activities of the CEL. Our Beacon Campaign, however, is funded by the CCL; thereby, contributions for lobbying activities are not tax-deductible. Frankly, it’s much more difficult raising money for the CCL, but we must occupy that space-no matter how difficult, no matter the odds, we must be faithful to our call to advocate for life and other biblical truths.
I truly wish I didn’t have to ask you for your help so soon, but the fight is being brought to us at this time. I do not have matching gifts or a significant portion of our needed funds raised. The last three Beacon Campaigns have seen us reach our goal of $40,000. This year, we’re going to need $50,000 to be thorough and effective. Please go to cclmaine.org, click on the Beacon Campaign banner, and make a sacrificial gift.
God is not confined to two and four year campaign / legislative cycles. While we must be present and effective in our lobbying activities, we continue to invest in the League’s long game–our Church Ambassador Network. I urge pastors and lay people to learn more about this exciting program by going to cclmaine.org and clicking the CAN tab at the top of our homepage.
We cannot grow weary in well doing. The battle (and the outcome) belongs to the Lord. Thank you for partnering with us in prayer and financial support as we continue to strive to see Maine become a state where God is honored, religious freedom flourishes, families thrive, and life is cherished.
