Good News

Last week, we asked you to reach out to your legislators to ask them to support Gov. Mills’ veto of the LD 554, the Tribal Casino Bill. As we mentioned in our last email blast, this bill had the potential of allowing 18 additional casinos in our state without any state regulation or oversight. I am happy to announce that the House of Representatives voted to sustain the governor’s veto and this bad legislation was stopped dead in its tracks. Many legislators who previously supported this bill heard your voice and voted to stop it. Thank you!

You know, there aren’t many times that we are on the same side of an issue with Gov. Mills, but she was absolutely right on this one. She and her administration have been unfairly criticized in the press and even have been accused of racism on this issue. I think when someone does the right thing, we should thank them. Please take a minute to click here and email Governor Mills to thank her for taking a stand against this very popular bill and doing what was best for Maine and its citizens.

A Victory for Life

One of the bills that the League and the Life Coalition pushed hard this legislative session was the Safe Haven Bill. While the bill did get broad support initially, it was sent to the appropriations table with an unexpected price tag of $65,000 for rulemaking. We were concerned this was a strategy to vote for the bill but then kill it with this price tag for rulemaking which was very unusual. I am extremely excited to announce that last week, the Safe Haven Bill was funded and will become law once signed by the governor.

Special thanks to Rep. Patrick Corey, the bill’s sponsor, and Suzanne Lafreniere, the Portland Diocese’s policy director, who originated this bill. Because of this legislation, Maine’s expectant mothers in dire straits have an anonymous option other than abortion to safely give up their child. Limited Space

Our candidate training session scheduled for July 31st at Crosspoint Church in Bangor is nearly full. There are more openings at the July 24th session which will be at East Auburn Baptist Church in Auburn. Contact Mike McClellan at policy@cclmaine.org for questions or registration.

Faith of Our Fathers

This past Sunday, on July 4, I had the privilege to do an interview session with Dr. Jerry Mick at Crosspoint Church discussing the faith of our founding fathers. Click here to see that service.

We are willing to serve your ministry by speaking in person or recording services for you. If you are interested in the League helping out with your pulpit needs, contact Carroll at carroll.conley@gmail.com
