LD 1763: Abortion Expansion Bill

All data and surveys point to the fact that the United States of America is moving more and more in a pro-life direction.  One of the most encouraging aspects of this trend is that the fastest growing, pro-life demographic is those under the age of 30.

Despite the fact that the overwhelming majority of states prohibit anybody but doctors from performing abortions, a bill, LD 1763, has been introduced into Maine’s legislature which would allow family nurse practitioners and physician assistants to perform abortions.

One of the great ironies that exist as a result of LD 1763 relates to the League’s previous advocacy for the creation of dental therapists.  Some of the legislators who declared “the sky would fall” if we allowed mid level dental professionals to extract a loose tooth will now suggest it’s perfectly safe to allow mid level health professionals to perform surgery on pregnant women to remove their unborn child.

Presently, this bill is “on the table” and not yet scheduled for committee or legislative action.  This is due in part to the fact the bill has been introduced by the Attorney General rather than a legislator.  Another factor is many democrats in conservative, rural districts do not want to deal with an abortion bill in proximity to this fall’s elections.
